Saturn . How to Use a Normal Socket With an Impact WrenchUsing a normal socket with an impact wrench is no different than using an impact socket with an impact wrench. The difference between the two sockets is the thickness and hardness of the material used to make them. Obviously, the impact socket is made to withstand the punishment of the impact wrench, but for projects that require less torque to either attach or remove a fastener, a normal socket will do just fine. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Air compressor Air hose Normal socket set Impact wrench Step by Step : 1 Attach the air compressor hose to the impact wrench by pulling back the compression ring on the female end of the hose and inserting the male fitting on the handle of the impact wrench into the hose connection and releasing the compression ring when the male fitting is seated. 2 Choose the appropriate size normal socket that will fit the nut or bolt being removed. Align the square hole in the socket with the square drive on the impact wrench and push the square drive of the impact wrench into the square hole of the socket. 3 Remove the nut or bolt by placing the exposed end of the socket over the nut or bolt and pressing the trigger of the impact wrench. Make sure that the impact is set in the reverse position before pressing the trigger. If the nut or bolt is being tightened, place the socket attached to the impact wrench over the nut or bolt and press the trigger while the wrench is in the forward position. Refer to the impact wrench manufacturer's manual for directions. Tips & Warnings While it is acceptable to use a normal socket on an impact wrench, the type of socket and the torque required for the particular task should be considered. For instance, it is acceptable to use normal sockets for any job involving a 3/8-inch drive impact wrench as long as the sockets are six-point types. Never use a 12-point socket in combination with an impact wrench. It is also acceptable to use normal six-point sockets for some jobs that require a 1/2-inch drive impact, but never for jobs that require a 3/4-inch or larger impact wrench. In those cases impact sockets must be used to protect both the socket and the person operating the impact wrench. Always wear safety glasses while operating air tools.
Saturn . How to Oil an Impact WrenchAn impact wrench is a tool powered by compressed air or electricity. The high-torque action of the impact wrench can loosen bolts or nuts -- such as those on vehicle wheel studs -- that would normally be very difficult, if not impossible to remove by hand with a ratchet wrench. Electric impact wrenches usually have a sealed motor, but air impact wrenches have moving parts that must be lubricated periodically. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Light motor oil Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the air hose from the wrench by pushing the collar fitting on the air hose away from the tool while pulling the air hose straight out of the tool. 2 Hold the tool with the air inlet -- usually located in the bottom of the hand grip -- facing upward. 3 Squeeze the trigger and hold it in. 4 Squeeze one or two drops of light motor oil into the air inlet hole. 5 Release the trigger. Wipe up any spilled oil from the exterior of the tool with a rag. Tips & Warnings To keep from having to manually oil your impact wrench, install an inline oiler between the air compressor and the air hose used to supply air to the tool. A small reservoir allows the right amount of lubricating oil to travel through the air line to the tool. Top off the reservoir with oil regularly to ensure the supply does not run out while using the impact wrench. Use only sockets and extensions designed to be used with impact wrenches. Standard sockets and extensions can shatter if used with an impact wrench, possibly causing severe injury to the user and to bystanders. Never operate an impact wrench at a higher air pressure than the tool can handle. Consult the owner's manual to determine the wrench's maximum allowable air pressure. Checking tire inflation pressure The single most important factor in caring for your tires is maintaining the correct inflation pressure. You should check your tires at least once a month and before every long trip to see that they're properly inflated. Underinflated tires wear out faster, create excessive heat, increase fuel consumption, and 895

The section "Checking your tires for wear," later in this chapter, can help you check for signs of these problems and tells you what to do about them. Check tire pressure in the morning before you use the car or when you've driven it less than a mile. If you drive more than that, your tires will heat up and the air will expand, so you won't get an accurate reading. In hot weather, the pressure in your tires rises as the air in them heats up and expands, which can result in overinflation. Conversely, in cold weather, the pressure falls as the cold air contracts and your tires can end up underinflated. As you'll see in the section called "Checking your tires for wear," these conditions can cause your tires to wear unevenly and wear out prematurely. \\V 4t ^ tn e weather gets very cold, it looks as though it will stay that way for some ~"~"~ time, and you get a low reading, you may want to add a bit of air to your tires to bring the pressure back up. Generally, though, tires that are correctly inflated tend to wear properly in spite of minor weather ups and downs. Just Saturn . How much does a rail car weigh?

Here's what you need to do to check the air pressure in your tires: 1. Buy an accurate tire gauge at a hardware store or auto supply store. Figure 19-2 shows you what a tire gauge looks like. I show you how to use one a little later in this section. 2. Determine the proper air pressure for your tires by looking for the proper inflation pressure on the tire decal. You can find the tire decal on one of the doors, door pillars, glove box, console, or trunk. Sometimes the tire decal specifies one pressure for the front tires and a different pressure for the rear tires. Saturn . How do you build up an engine to take more boost?
